The beautiful Charente-Maritime department in western France is a haven for camping and mobile home holidays, walking and cycling holidays in addition to the forests and wildlife you will find there. Not only that but the surfing is good here too.

Luxury camping and mobile home holidays in the Charente department of western France are an absolute delight as for one thing the Charente region has its own little micro climate which gives it more sunshine hours per year than anywhere in France other than Provence, and at a fraction of the cost of Provencal living too!

The coastal region of Charente lies immediately below the Vendee on the west coast just above la Rochelle and stretches down to the mighty river Gironde where Royan is situated, and in between those two cities are little camping resorts by the score.

Camping resorts start in the north on the Ile de Re, though it is best to check with your tour operator about toll charges to the island as we know they can be on the high side. Ile d’Oleron is just as beautiful but there are no toll fees to pay.

Luxury camping around la Rochelle is delightful but we suggest you take a Park & Ride if you are thinking of going into this wonderful walled city as parking spaces are literally unavailable but Park and Ride is very cheap and runs every 20 mins or so.

Have a walk around the walls of la Rochelle and you will see most of the city, the harbour and some of the most excellent beaches to be found on the west coast.

There are forest nature reserves along the Charente coast, proper forest land on and just below the Ile d’Oleron which is reached via Marennes, one of the main Charente camping holiday resorts.

Further down the coast is Royan, another major city of this region which happens to be well placed for the busy ferry route to Landes in Aquitaine which you can take to access the Landes coast without having to drive down to Bordeaux and back up again.

Royan itself has great beaches and is another superb resort for camping and mobile home holidays in the Charente-Maritime.
