Having the right sleeping bag can be the difference between waking up, feeling refreshed and ready for another day and not sleeping at all.
When deciding on a sleeping bag, the two main factors to consider are the shape, and the insulating materials.
Factor 1: Shape
Sleeping bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The shape affects the sleeping bags ability to trap heat, bulkiness and overall sleeping space.
Mummy Style Sleeping Bags – Mummy shape sleeping bags minimises the air movement around your body. The bag is tapered which reduces the volume of air inside the bag , this means that the sleeping bag is more efficient when it comes to trapping heat and keeping you warm.
Mummy sleeping bags are less bulky then traditional styles which will save you precious space making them ideal if you are going on long hikes. The mummy shape is your best choice for colder conditions.
Rectangular Sleeping Bags – This style is heavier and bulkier than Mummy sleeping bags due to its lack of tapered ends. Rectangular sleeping bags are less efficient in terms of heat insulation. However, they are more spacious than Mummy bags and allow you to change sleeping positions.
Rectangular sleeping bags are ideal for casual camping trips where weather conditions aren’t extreme or too cold.
Double Sleeping Bags – The double style sleeping bag is ideal for couples who want comfort and space. As the name suggests, double sleeping bags are twice the size of a single and has plenty of room for two people to share. Although, the bag won’t retain heat well, feeding of each other’s body heat is great way to stay warm.
Factor 2: Materials
Sleeping bags are filled with either down or synthetic fibres. Down is a natural material, made from the fluffy undercoating found just beneath the outer feathers of ducks and geese. Down insulation is very efficient at trapping air, keeping you nice and warm in the cold. Down filled sleeping bags are light and easily compressed, so it can pack small and can also be fluffed back into shape easily.
The downsides to Down insulated sleeping bags is that they are more expensive than synthetic materials and also takes longer to dry if it gets wet.
Synthetic sleeping bags are considerably bulkier and weigh more than a down bag but they do retain heat when wet.
Overall synthetic sleeping bags are ideal for wet conditions but are heavier and bulkier than Down, leaving you less room in your backpack. Down sleeping bags are best suited for cold, dry conditions due to Downs superb ability to retain warmth whilst dry.
